Degenerative joint disease or "arthritis" of the hip is extremely common among our population, affecting about 90 per 100,000 people per year. It is essentially the progressive loss of the hip joint cartilage which normally allows smooth motion of the hip joint in multiple directions. There are several etiologies which can cause a hip to be affected with arthritis.
